Food Services Worker Program

Our Food Service Worker training program provides you with knowledge and skills needed to be an integral part of an integrated healthcare team.

This program was developed to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health and Long­-Term Care and employers for those employed as a Food Services Worker in a Long­-Term Care facility.

Through a blend of in-class learning and hands-on experiences, you’ll learn about the intricacies of quantity food preparation, basic therapeutic diets and nutrition, as well as essential skills in proper sanitation, safety practices, effective communication, and customer service.

Program Details

The Food Service Worker Online Live (FSWO) program is delivered using three methods that build on each other, with an emphasis on convenience for our students. This approach enables improved learning effectiveness while ensuring the students have the competency to succeed in their field of study.

Delivery Methods

Online Flexible Learning Activities – Self-directed assignments designed to build on livestream sessions and develop topic knowledge using video, readings, exercises, quizzes, and independent projects to be completed during the week.

In-person Practical Labs – Regularly scheduled in campus sessions designed to build on the theory by simulating real world experiential situations in preparation for a career.

Externship – A placement with an employer designed to bridge the gap between classroom and the work environment.

What Does the Food Service Worker Program Cover?

In the Food Service Worker program at Medix, students gain valuable skills essential for success in institutional food preparation environments. Here are some of the key skills and knowledge you’ll develop:

  • Explore food service worker roles in commercial enterprises and healthcare facilities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current legislation, standards, and ethical considerations in the food industry.
  • Perform basic food preparation and handling procedures while integrating health and nutrition principles.
  • Identify proper food storage, handling techniques, and sources of contaminant transmission.
  • Demonstrate proper use, sanitation, and storage of food service equipment.

  • Apply appropriate interpersonal communication skills with clients and co-workers individually and in groups.
  • Apply basic business skills, including budget planning, management, and proficiency in handling financial transactions.

Food Service Worker: Hands-On Learning

As a crucial part of your training, you’ll embark on a 150 hour structured work experience field placement. This immersive component is designed to seamlessly integrate classroom teachings into real-world scenarios, providing you with invaluable hands-on experience.
